    Just-concluded 2023 was the hottest year in recorded history, and likely beyond, the EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) said on Tuesday in a report. “With the global-average temperature 14.98 C (58.96F), 2023 has replaced 2016 as the warmest calendar year on record,” it noted, adding that “each month from June to December in 2023 was warmer than the corresponding month in any previous year.”

    A tsunami measuring about 3 meters high had reached the Shika nuclear power plant in Japan's Ishikawa prefecture after it was hit by a powerful earthquake measuring 7.6-magnitude on January 1, according to the plant's operator. The tsunami reached the facility at about 5.45 p.m. on January 1, approximately 90 minutes after the quake hit the prefecture and its vicinity, Xinhua news agency quoted the Hokuriku Electric Power Company as saying.


  • 65 Boeing 737 aircraft grounded after Alaska Airlines incident

    Alaska Airlines grounded its fleet of Boeing 737 Max 9 aircraft on Friday after a flight operated by the airline made an emergency landing at Portland International Airport in Oregon that evening because of a midair pressure problem that passengers said blew out a chunk of the fuselage. The airline said that Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 had made a safe emergency landing carrying 171 passengers and six crew members at the Portland airport shortly after takeoff for Ontario, Calif. Within hours, the company said that it was grounding all 65 of its Boeing 737 Max 9 aircraft until it could inspect each plane. Those planes make up about a fifth of its fleet. It said in a statement that it expected to complete the inspections within a few days.

  • Polar Bear Dies As Bird Flu Strain H5N1 Sweeps Across the Globe

    In the last two years, as more wild birds got sick, different animals like dolphins, porpoises, seals, foxes, and otters also got the disease. A polar bear was found dead in Alaska, and it's the first time we know of a polar bear dying from bird flu. The bear was discovered in Utqiagvik, an area that's been hit hard by the current global outbreak. The death was confirmed in December by the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation. "This is the first polar bear case reported anywhere," Dr Bob Gerlach, Alaska's state veterinarian, told the Alaska Beacon. Yet, according to Dr Gerlach, the bear might not have become sick directly from eating an infected bird.

As data transmission from the Japan Meteorological Agency tide gauge set up in the city was interrupted immediately after the earthquake began, details of the situation were initially unclear. The university’s analysis shows that the tsunami reached the city before the residents started to evacuate.
